The Home Front 1939-1945

A workshop to introduce children to life on the Home Front during the last war. Dealing with topics such as evacuation, rationing, air raids and volunteer organisations including the Home Guard, ARP and Women’s Land Army, the workshop uses items from the Museum’s extensive handling collection and reconstructed 1940s house. Children can try on gas masks, helmets and uniforms and sit in an Anderson shelter while listening to the sounds of bombers overhead. A particular favourite is the hand-cranked air raid siren - very loud!

Additionally, schools can opt to experience a genuine wartime style lunch – Spam fritter, mashed potato and carrots, followed by jam roly poly and custard. Extra charge of £2.50 per head applies.
