A TURRET IN YOUR TOWN

This hidden treasure does not actually belong to the Tank Museum, but there is a connection, of sorts.
Wimborne Minster is an ancient Market Town about 20 miles east of Bovington but hidden down the back of one of those narrow streets is something very unusual.

High up, above the back yard of someone’s house, is this strange object.

Take a closer look and a tank enthusiast will tell you that it is the turret from a Charioteer tank, with the gun barrel chopped off. It must have been there for at least 40 years and is said to have been used by an amateur astronomer to scan the heavens. Today it looks a bit sorry for itself.

The connection is that at long last our Charioteer has been given a spring clean and a repaint so that it now looks very smart and is back on display.
