W F Butlin's 1914 Star

The 1914 star was awarded to those soldiers who served in France or Belgium between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. It is sometimes known as the Mons star as most of the recipients took part in the British retreat at Mons in 1914.

When World War I one broke out in 1914 the British possessed a small but effective volunteer army.

Eventually conscription would swell the British Army to enormous proportions but initially this small force was sent to stem the German advance. The 1914 Star was issued to these volunteer soldiers to mark them out from the later conscripted masses.

This 1914 Star belonged to WO2 W F Butlin who, along with his medals, left a unique record of his service life. Like many career soldiers, before World War I he had served all over the Empire.

During his travels he amassed an amazing collection of 699 postcards from his various postings. The album of these postcards is now in the Museums Library and Archives.
