This bravery award
was introduced in 1993 and is available to all ranks of the Armed Forces.
It is a 'level two award', which ranks it immediately
below the Victoria Cross
and the George Cross. To date only ten awards have been made.
The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross
Lance Corporal of Horse Michael
Flynn, Blues and Royals, was awarded the Conspicuous Gallantry
Cross in 2003 for two acts of gallantry whilst serving
in Iraq.
During the second Gulf War, LCoH
Flynn was in command of a Scimitar Reconnaissance Vehicle
as part of D Squadron, Household Cavalry Regiment.
The Squadron was tasked with finding Iraqi positions
along the Shaft-al-Arab waterway for the 16 Air Assault
Brigade.
Flynn's Troop was extremely successful in this
role and managed to find and destroy a significant
proportion of an Iraqi Armoured Division.
In April 2003, the Troop Leader's Scimitar
overturned in a deep irrigation ditch. The driver
scrambled out but the commander and gunner were
trapped in the turret with water flooding in.
Having radioed for an ambulance, Flynn attached chains
to two other vehicles and pulled the overturned Scimitar
back to a 45° angle. He then pulled out the
two remaining crew members and resuscitated the Troop
Leader.
