Clifford Cyril Cannon

Cpl. Clifford Cyril Cannon, 7910724, 6th Royal Tank Regiment

"Born in 1914 as one of 4 brothers. Grew up in Sandon near Buntingford, Hertfordshire, in a farming community. He left farm work and joined Meredew Furnishers as a carpenter. Preferring the outside of a factory he went on to become one of their drivers.

Large lorries and perhaps tanks had something in common. On call up he was trained for a period at Bovington. Being sent overseas to the North African campaign in 1941, he used to talk about how he chased and was chased by Rommel, and spent a considerable time in Tobruk.

As time went on his unit was finally sent over to Italy and thereafter he served on the Eastern Front. At the end of the war he had reached Klagenfurt in Austria. Upon returning to thge UK he rejoined Meredew's and continued driving for them until the mid 1970's when he retired to Devon and his beloved garden.

Cliff was both President of Baldock cricket club and vice-president at Bovey Tracey for a time. He passed away on his 89th birthday. He Feared Naught!"
