F. Apthorpe was a private in the 5th (E) Battalion, Tank Corps and his personal diary shows that he watched the Battle of Cambrai taking place, in November 1917. He was a practising catholic and at the end of the war was awarded the Papal Cross by Pope Paul VI. He also took part, as a witness, in the court martial of a fellow soldier in February 1918. The soldier was acquitted.
