For gallantry at Ypres on August 22nd, 1917. Although badly wounded in the eyes and nearly blind, he took command of the crew of F 43, which was ditched near Somme Farm, when 2nd Lieutenant Harding was hit, sent the crew on with guns and stuck to 2nd Lieutenant Harding until he saw he was dead.
