Tales of valour
FARRAR Walter Frederick, (Temporary 2nd Lieutenant)
“F” Battalion Tank Corps
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action at Masnieres on November 20th 1917. During the attack he destroyed a machine-gun position, killing the crew and taking the gun on board. On reaching the bridgehead at Masnieres, he found the bridge partially destroyed, but in view of his orders which laid down the urgency of crossing, he did not hesitate to drive his tank over in an effort to span the gap, although the river was reported to be 12 feet deep. His tank sank, but he got his crew out safely, being the last to leave.
