Tales of valour

Distinguished Service Order

For Leadership and Outstanding Bravery : Immediate D.S.O.

At Argrouth Sellah on 22nd April 1943, Lt.Col. Timmis led his Battalion with outstanding success forward and succeeded injoining with the infantry in a series of assaults to gain the high ground.

He himself, was always master of the situation and wherever mortars or machine guns held up the advance, he boldly went forward to clear the trouble.

During the advance, when two infantry commanding Officers were casualties, he collected the infantry to his tanks and succeeded in capturing the first objective.

Later he went forward on to the final objectives and knocked out four field guns and enabled the infantry to gain possession of the dominating heights.

Although wounded he refused to quit the battle field and only when the position was stabilized did he go back.

Due to the complete co-operation of his tanks with 128 Bde and his outstanding leadership, the objectives were all siezed and held.

Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire

Brigadier Timmis assumed the appointment of Brig. AFV Eighth Army on 7th March 1945. At this time the Eighth Army was making preparations for the final offensive, and no praise is too high for the manner in which brigadier Timmis threw himself into the work or organising the armour of Eighth Army for battle. The work he undertook was varied and complicated, including as it did the organisation of Fantail units and the conversion of tanks into armoured infantry carriers. Brigadier Timmis organised this work in a highly efficient manner and by his personal drive and initiative ensured that the work was completed before the target date.

During the fast moving battle which ensued, Brigadier Timmis was faced with the problem of keeping the armoured brigadesup to strength over long distances, and this task he organised and accomplished in a most praiseworthy manner. He was tireless in visiting forward units and by his personal supervision, ensured that the forwqard units were never short of a tank in battle.

He set a splendid example to his staff and, by his tact and efficiency held the complete confidence of all the armoured formations in Eighth Army.
