The Military Cross
The demands of the First World War made it necessary to introduce this gallantry award for junior officers and warrant officers of the Army. The Military Cross was instituted in December 1914 - it is issued unnamed and since 1938 the year of award has been engraved on the lower limb. Bars are issued for further awards. Since 1993 the Military Cross has been available for all ranks.
The design is a simple silver cross having on each arm the Imperial crown and in the centre the current sovereign's cipher.
The ribbon is three equal stripes of white, purple, white.
