1939 - 45 Star
This star was given for service between 3rd September 1939 and 2nd September 1945. For the Army the qualification was six months service in an operational command, which did not include the United Kingdom. Airborne troops qualified after two months operational service if they had taken part in an airborne operation. Time spent as a P.O.W. counted towards this award as did operational service curtailed through death, disability or wounds, irrespective of the length of service.
A six pointed bronze star with the GRI/VI monogram in the circular centre, surmounted by a crown. Inscribed 'THE 1939-1945 STAR'.
The ribbon is equal stripes of dark blue, red and light blue - symbolising the Royal Navy, Army and Air Force respectively.
