MAKING A BIG IMPRESSION
– ART UNDER PRESSURE AT THE TANK MUSEUM

Tank tracks were the inspiration behind Children’s Art Week activities
held at The Tank Museum today.
Children from St Mary’s RC School in Wool
used the weight of a 50 ton tank to create a unique mural
which will be on display at the Museum during Half Term Week.

Museum spokesman Nik Wyness said; “Science and Art Presenter Laurie Barbour hosted an art workshop that examined and imitated patterns that are made by stamps and prints – such as the patterns left by tanks as they move on their tracks.”
On specially prepared boards, the pupils created the prints that would be used to create the mural. These were brightly painted, placed in two rows in front of a Swiss Main Battle Tank, and laid beneath long sheets of paper.
“To complete the printing process,” says Nik, “the tank was then carefully driven over the boards as the children looked on with fascination – we were not sure how well it would work. Then the boards were removed, revealing the new artwork - to everyone’s delight!”
The activity was held ahead of The Tank Museum’s Half Activity Term Week, begining on October 24th.
“Aside from the usual live action displays, visitors to the Museum will have the chance to explore their creativity during a series of supervised Big Draw workshops like this one,” Nik added.
The Big Draw is a national initiative to encourage people of all ages to try their hands at art. Last year, over half a million people took part in over 1000 venues nationwide.
“The aim of the Big Draw is to remind people that being creative is fun regardless of ability,” Nik said.
In addition, Artist Heidi Steller will be visiting the Museum to help visitors sketch the moody scenes in the WW1 Trench Experience (25th & 27th), and she will be accompanied by the Household Cavalry and Royal Armoured Corps recruiting teams – who will be demonstrating a modern British Army Challenger 2 in live action displays.
“There will also be an opportunity to step inside a WWI tank, experience the thrill of riding in a tracked vehicle as it thunders around the Museum arena, and the doors to our `Home Front House` will be open to give visitors a taste of British daily life in WWI.”, Nik added.
The highlight of the week is sure to be the explosive Tanks In Action display (Thursday 27th October), a major forty-five minute show where visitors can witness the past roaring into life. The show culminates in a mock tank battle, featuring pyrotechnic explosions and a variety of historic armoured fighting vehicles, complete with expert commentary. |
