HLF THUMBS UP FOR
TANK MUSEUM
|
| News
Release issued: 26th January 2005 |
|
Tank
Museum has been successful
in its Stage 1 Heritage Lottery Fund bid for £8.55m. |
Tank
Museum Director John Woodward said; "We
are delighted to have passed this critical stage,
and we can now look forward to developing our
plans supported by the HLF."
The South-Dorset charity submitted the bid in
June last year as part of its At Close Quarters
development scheme - set to be the biggest
development of a tourist attraction in the history
of Dorset.
"The development grant will enable us to
improve the displays and help our visitors gain
more enjoyment and knowledge from our globally
unique collection," said John.
The At Close Quarters project features a number
of ways to improve the visitor experience, including; |
|
- Better interpretation and enjoyable learning
facilities - bringing the story of armoured
warfare to life for a wider range of audiences.
- A more spacious and welcoming building
with room to understand and enjoy the scale
and scope of the collections.
- Increased live action and tank displays
throughout the year
- Improved space and facilities to conserve
and protect the world's most important collection
of armoured fighting vehicles and their supporting
collections.
- Excellent visitor amenities.
|
|
"We are grateful for this opportunity
from the Heritage Lottery Fund and for
the contribution of our leading supporter,
the Ministry of Defence, as well as our
other generous funders who have supported us
so far.
"We are now embarking on a long and
exciting process to make this nationally important
museum one of the most engaging and rewarding
visitor experiences in the South West,"
he added.
The `new` Tank Museum is scheduled to open
its doors in March 2009.

Success!
£8.5million for a contemporary museum to
reveal the human stories of war
It is the only museum of its kind, popular with
people from all walks of life, of international
importance and has the world's most comprehensive
collection of armoured vehicles in one place.
However, Dorset's Tank Museum has been suffering
from severely cramped conditions and limited information
for visitors.
The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) today announced
it is setting aside £8.5million and £393,500
development funding for inspiring plans for a
state-of-the-art museum, bringing to life the
human stories of the realities of war.
Carole Souter, Director of the Heritage Lottery
Fund, said:
"Our support will transform this highly popular
museum and will further develop an appreciation
of how war has shaped our world. War is unfortunately
still a force in today's society and we should
not forget the struggles that have shaped history
or those who sacrificed their lives for us."
By creating more space at the museum, the unique
collections, ranging from the first tank ever
made to medals and photos, can be completely redisplayed
in a more accessible environment and offer a much
deeper exploration of the past. The project will
also ensure that the collections are saved for
future generations as the current environmental
conditions are causing some corrosion to the tanks.
Billy Bragg, local singer, song writer and political
activist, welcomed the news of support for his
favourite museum:
"The Tank Museum has the greatest collection
of fighting vehicles in the world. Each has a
story to tell, from the very first tanks ever
built to the most recent hi-tech developments.
The award of this grant will at last allow the
whole collection to be displayed in a way that
is accessible to all." |
