THE STORY OF A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR

News Release issued: 16th December 2004

The 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day, and to mark this occasion Tank Museum Friend Danek Bardach is to tell his own remarkable story.

Danek, a Polish Jew, witnessed the cruelty of the Nazis Anti-Semitic policy first hand.

Aged just 13 when the Nazis invaded his native Poland, he suddenly found himself at risk of his life.
Whilst others like him were rounded up and sent to concentration camps, he owes his survival to `a miracle`; being delivered from the clutches of the Nazis at the last possible moment. But his good fortune did not extend to the rest of his family, none of whom he would ever see again.

At 15 he found himself transported to Germany and into a forced labour camp.

When the camp was liberated, he joined the Royal Tank Regiment where he remained until 1953.

He said; “It is important that these events are kept alive in people's minds, as even now there are some who are simply unaware of what was really happening in Europe during the war, which is very sad.”

Danek now lives in Verwood near Bournmeouth, Dorset.

On the evening of the 27th January, Danek will be sharing his experiences with the public, explaining how he survived and remembering those who did not.
