NEW COMMANDER AT THE TANK MUSEUM

News Release issued: 8th April 2006
The Tank Museum has appointed a new Director who will lead The Museum through the most exciting developments in its history.
Thirty-Four year old Richard Smith picks up the reins of Dorset's largest Museum on April 10th, as present Director Colonel John Woodward retires.

Richard, A history graduate, has spent 11 years working for P&O Nedlloyd in a mixture of commercial, project management and service delivery functions across three different continents.

He said; "I am delighted to have been asked to take on the role of Director of the Tank Museum. For me, this is my dream job in which I can combine my experience in business with my passion for military history. We have a tremendously exciting programme of change over the next few years as we redevelop the museum. We have a world class collection and I hope to be able to deliver a world class experience for our visitors."

Richard replaces John Woodward, who has retired after 13 years at the helm of the Tank Museum. His tenure will be remembered for his tireless work to secure the future of The Museum and its collections, most notably by instigating the £16m development project At Close Quarters.

In January 2005, the Heritage Lottery Fund pledged its support for the project, awarding it £8.55m. The project is set to be the biggest development of a tourist attraction in Dorset's history, making an important contribution to the local economy.
Furthermore, it will dramatically improve conditions inside the buildings making them suitable for long term preservation of the collections, and improve the visitor experience by modernising amenities and exhibitions.

John Woodward said; "I have enjoyed my time at The Tank Museum enormously, and so it is obviously difficult to leave. But I am confident that I am leaving the Museum in a most capable pair of hands, and look forward to Richard taking this great Museum forward.
