ROLLS-ROYCE ROLLS OFF
News Release issued: 20th August 2004

A classic Rolls Royce often turns a few heads,
but lucky motorists on the road in Dorset today
will have been greeted by a most unusual sight.

A Rolls Royce armoured car, one of only two remaining working examples in the world, left its home at The Tank Museum for essential maintenance at a specialist vintage Rolls Royce workshop in Oxford.

Museum spokesman Nik Wyness said; "We are incredibly proud of our Rolls Royce; it is many people's favourite exhibit and it is probably our single most valuable vehicle. It is impossible to give it a market value, but it is quite simply a priceless item."

The Rolls Royce armoured car is based on the chassis of the renowned Silver Ghost - in its day regarded as `the best car in the world`. It entered service in 1920 was retired in the early 1940s, having seen active service all around the world.

Nik Wyness added; "The vehicle is over 80 years old now and has never required any major restoration work. This is a testament to the quality of its build and the excellence of the devoted staff that care for it."

The vehicle has even become a Royal favourite, escorting HM The Queen on a number of occasions in Dorset and London, and is set to appear in this years' Lord Mayors Show with a Challenger tank also supplied by the Tank Museum.

Museum Curator David Willey "We are sending the Rolls Royce away for maintenance now just to tune it up ahead of its appearance in the parade of the Lord Mayors Show. It only requires some minor work done on its engine to ensure that it will run smoothly; hopefully for at least another 80 years."

The Dorset charity will be taking part in the Lord Mayors Show on the 13th November 2004. For more information about The Tank Museum and its outstanding collection of armour, call 01929 405096 or see www.tankmuseum.co.uk.

Full Service History: Rolls Royce Armoured Car - 1920 Mk1.
1920 Entered service with the 5th Armoured Car Company, Tank Corps in and sent to Ireland to support the Black and Tans during an outbreak of Republican resistance prior to the creation of the Irish Free State.
1921 5th Armoured Car Company withdraws from Dublin, and the unit is posted to Scarborough. At a time when nearly all other armoured car units were serving overseas, this is possibly due to need to maintain a visible force in the North in the face of an increased threat of industrial unrest.
1926 RR armoured cars are used to escort food & fuel convoys during the General Strike, notably in London. It is not known where our vehicle served during this period, but it is highly likely to have been involved in guard or escort duties.
1927 5th Armoured Car Company is sent to China as part of a League of Nations `peacekeeping` force to protect European interests in and around Shanghai during armed local disturbances. The company saw action in various minor skirmishes whilst undertaking patrols during their deployment.
1928 5th Armoured Car Company tour of duty in Egypt. Our vehicle is re-painted from the deep green sported in China to desert tones.
1932 5th Armoured Car Company are re-equipped with light tanks on their return to the UK. RR armoured cars are redistributed amongst regiments that remain in Egypt. Our vehicle is attached to the 12th Royal Lancers.
1934 12th Royal Lancers return to UK, leaving our vehicle to the 11th Hussars
1938 12th Royal Lancers are re-equipped with the new Morris AC9 armoured car. Our vehicle is shipped back to the UK for scrap.
1939 Our vehicle is saved from the scrap heap by the onset of war. Taken on by the Derbyshire Yeomanry, our vehicle is on active patrols on the vulnerable Norfolk coast. It is one of 42 remaining RR armoured cars of its type.
1941 Eventually, our vehicle is replaced by a modern equivalent. It is sent to the Army Driving and Maintenance School here at Bovington.
1946 The vehicle is handed over to The Tank Museum, and put on public display, repainted in the dark green it sported in China, 1927.
1950- The vehicle enjoys its retirement as an ambassadorial vehicle for the Museum during the 50's, 60's, 70's and 80's, due chiefly to it mechanical reliability. The vehicle goes on to make appearances in TV shows and Films, and is in demand at international classic car events, including the Louis Vitton Classic Car show in France.
1991 Our vehicle delights audiences at the Royal Tournament at Earls Court in London. Following Desert Storm, the theme is "Desert Warfare", and our vehicle is temporarily re-painted in the colours of its Egyptian service.
1997 The Queen visits the Tank Museum to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the first major tank battle at Cambrai in WWI. Our vehicle is proud to transport Her Majesty from the museum to her helicopter past cheering crowds at the end of her visit.
2000 The Queen is escorted by our vehicle from Buckingham Palace to Whitehall, where she unveils the official monument to the Royal Tank Regiment. A replica of this statue stands outside the Museum.
