Doug Baxter, Managing Director, SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems UK, said: “As a worldwide leader of land systems technology and system integration we are delighted to support The Tank Museum in this important development project. The Museum is a unique educational institution for the Royal Armoured Corps and an unparalleled visitor attraction for the general public. This is an exciting project and we aim to work with The Tank Museum to ensure that we preserve this significant aspect of British history”.
The Tank Museum holds the world’s finest and most historically significant collection of tanks. Based in Bovington, which remains the home of the Royal Armoured Corps today, the collection is over 250 strong, running from the world’s first tank to the modern Challenger 2. The Museum tells the story of the tank, its development, and of the men that have fought in them in the 90 years since tanks were first used by the British army in 1916.
Tank Museum Director Richard Smith said; “We are delighted to receive the support of SELEX Sensors & Airborne Systems UK, which represents an exciting link between the history and future of armoured warfare“
In July 2006, the Heritage Lottery Fund confirmed that the Tank Museum would be awarded a £9.6 million grant towards a £16 million redevelopment project. Titled At Close Quarters, the project will provide better environmental conditions for the collection, and improved displays and exhibitions to enhance the visitor experience.
Building work on the new 5000 sqm display hall is set to begin in April 2007.
