RICHARD HOLMES BRINGS TOMMY TO LIFE

News Release issued: 18th November 2004

TV historian Richard Holmes entertained an audience of 300 at The Tank Museum with a presentation to promote his new book titled; “Tommy; The British Soldier on The Western Front”.

Richard Holmes, professor of Military and Security Studies at Cranfield University and the Royal Military College of Sciences, has written over a dozen books on military history, and has presented the BBC television series War Walks.

He said; “This is one of my favourite Museums. I have spoken here before and the audience is always warm and enthusiastic.”

He obliged dozens of fans, taking questions and signing copies of his books for almost an hour after the presentation ended.

One young military history enthusiast, 14 year old Edward Gillin, travelled all the way from Totnes in Devon to attend the lecture.

His mother Louise said; “Edward loves history, and we have become used to travelling long distances for his hobby. We really enjoyed listening to Richard Holmes – we just wish we lived closer!”

Edwards enthusiasm and knowledge has impressed staff so much at The Museum, that he has been offered a weeks work experience during half term.
Lectures at The Museum continue on Thursday 16th December, when local historian and author Rodney Legg will be giving an insight into Wartime Dorset. Based on first hand accounts uncovered by his own meticulous research, he will tell the story of how Dorset played a vital role in the liberation of Europe.
