FRIEND OF WAR POET TO SPEAK AT MUSEUM

News Release issued: 1st February 2005
Siegfried Sassoon is arguably the most highly regarded War Poet
of the First World War, but few people ever really understood
what drove him or who he really was.

Dennis Silk is one such exception.
Arguably the world authority on the great poet,
he is fortunate enough to have known Sassoon from 1953
until his death 13 years later.
On Tuesday 15th February, Dennis will be sharing his personal memories of Siegfried Sassoon at The Tank Museum, explaining what sparked his creativity and what motivated his wartime exploits.

He said; "He was a very unusual sort of person - very eccentric, but wonderfully accessible both as a man and a poet.

"When Siegfried Sassoon left England for the Western Front, he was a keen young soldier. Three years later, he was prepared to risk his own life by publicly speaking out against the conduct of the war.

"Having fought courageously, winning the Military Cross, he began to question the leadership of the war, which he felt was enormously wasteful. Using his poetry as a vehicle, he set out to pillory and satirise the war.

"He brought the horrific realities of war from the front lines and hospitals to the forefront of public debate. He had an enormous effect on public opinion, and he had a profound influence on other well known War Poets of the day, such as Wilfred Owen, Robert Graves, who imitated his style of writing."
