MOVERS AND SHAKERS

Although the Tank Museum is closed it is not quiet and there is plenty of work to do. For
one thing many exhibits have been on the move.

In order to clear space for the builders to install the new running track the huge, Conqueror based vehicle which we have used for years as a commentary box and information centre had to be moved. The Army provided a Challenger ARRV to shift it and here we see it just getting under way.
This strange tank was the original Conqueror gas turbine prototype which was later rebuilt with a large crew cab as a dynamometer vehicle for testing the haulage power of other vehicles. We added the second storey in order to give the commentator a good view of what is going on around the track. As a dynamometer it was painted yellow and is still known here as the Yellow Peril, despite the fact that it has been painted green and black for years!

Some exhibits can move under their own power. Here our Centurion Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle is on the move to a new location, passing the Centurion ‘moving target’ tank which now serves as a Gate Guardian on the exit road from the Museum.

Whenever he learns that anything is being moved our staff photographer Roland Groom rushes out to get a few pictures. Some are vehicles that have not been out in the daylight for as long as anyone can remember, like our Crossley/Chevrolet Indian Pattern armoured car, seen here basking in the late afternoon sun. The plan is to display this exhibit in the new building that is currently under construction in order to record something of Britain’s Imperial past.
