   Did you know...
by the time you have finished reading this page,
you could have been hit by a 'Kinetic Shell' fired 5 miles away…..
You will if you visit the Tank Museum's Family Activity trail!

Designed to entertain and educate all members of the family,
this exciting new trail was officially opened on 11th February 2002
by Lord Evans of Temple Guiting CBE, the Chairman of Resource
(The Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries).
There are six stations situated throughout the Museum.
They offer full interactivity for all members of the family from 7 years upwards
(with no upper age limit - in fact the interactivity usually increases the older you are!)
You are positively encouraged to:
  • move
  • pull
  • push
  • wind
  • touch
  • listen
as we demonstrate firepower, armour and mobility using scientific fact and anecdotal reference
The Family Trail endorses aspects of the Museum's current interpretation by appealing to the needs of families, as well as adults with special interests and school groups.
It supplies more hands on exhibits, improves context and provides a greater variety of interpretive approaches. Plus it's great fun!
The six stations include interactives, 'WOW' factors and true-life experiences by the crew who fought in them and for the very young there are different shapes that can be punched onto a card to act as a souvenir and reminder of their visit.
Station 1
Did you know:
The cost of a tank in 1917 was £9000 (£244,800 in today's money) and a tank today costs £2,000,000
This introduction to the trail is about the tank crews, their bravery, teamwork, skill, strength and dedication.
Station 2
Did you know: A Scorpion tank has less ground pressure than a ballerina
Find out about Mobility. Learn about the tracks, how they move, how the weight is distributed over the ground so that a heavy vehicle can move over soft ground. Also covered is the subject of suspension and the power and size of the engine.
Station 3
Did you know: By the time you have finished reading this you will have been hit by a 'Kinetic Shell' fired 5 miles away.
This station teaches us about 'Firepower'.
The impact and damage to armour and the skill required aiming the gun.
Station 4
Discover the use of armour and how it utilised naturally in the animal kingdom.
Did you know that armour is at its thinnest underneath, which is the same as most animals.

Station 5
Uncover the use of camouflage and the various types of vision systems.
See if you can find out how camouflage is used by animals and find examples of some very strange colour schemes used on vehicles in all types of terrain.

Station 6
'It's not comfortable inside a tank, it's dark smelly and very cramped'.
This way station tells about life inside a tank.
Have you ever thought how 4 people eat, sleep, drink and go to the toilet, when they are in wartime conditions?
