L.D. Mason

RSM Leslie (Spike) Derrick Mason, MM, joined the Army on 24th November 1936 and transferred to the Royal Tank Corps on 25th August 1937. He retired from the Regular Army on 24th July 1963 and was accepted as a Yeoman of the Guard (Queen's Bodyguard) on 11th February 1973.

During his time with the 1st Royal Tank Regiment he served in the Middle East, India, Iraq, A.A.I., Korea, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Germany.

He enjoyed playing Rugby and Hockey for the Regiment, he was also an active canoeist completing the Devizes - Westminster run on several occasions with other members of the Regiment and Boys Squadron.

He was also an excellent shot, he once shot a snipe in flight from the turret of a moving tank and was presented with a silver statue of the bird by the Regiment.
