Willie Ramsden

SSM Willie Ramsden, 7878640

Born in Hunslet Carr Leeds and went to school there.
Having left school at the age of 14 to become an apprentice carpenter he then joined the Royal Tank Corps on 1st November 1926. Stationed at Lydd in Kent, he became a member of the 3rd Battalion Band and won many athletic prizes, the medals of which are believed to be with the memorabilia of 3rd Royal Tank Regiment (now 2nd RTR). His finest sporting achievement was to hold the Army Record for the Mile.
The family were stationed in India 1935-1940, spending some time on the North West Frontier with armoured cars. On returning to England he was sent to Northern Ireland as an Instructor with the North Irish Horse and then with them to North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
On demobilisation he joined the WD Constabulary at C.O.D. Chilwell and started the Nottingham Branch of the Tank Corps Old Comrades Association of which he was secretary until his death at age 67.
