Tales of valour

Military Medal

Captured at Bir Hakeim on 27th May, 1942, he was sent via Derna, Benghazi, Suani Ben Adem and Capua to Campo 53 at Macerata.
While at Derna and Benghazi, Webb-Morris twice attempted to escape by cutting the wire but on the first occasion he was recaptured by sentries outside the camp, and on the second the alarm was given and he had to abandon the attempt. At Suani Ben Adem he hid with two other NCO's in an Italian lorry, but they were discovered by the driver before he left the camp.
After the Armistice, P/W in Campo 53 were told not to escape, but on 16th Sept., when most of the Italian guards had deserted, Webb-Morris walked out of the main gate of the Camp wearing civilian clothes he had collected from personal parcels. He made his way South, meeting British troop at Lanciano on 4th December, 1943.
