Richard Herbert

Military Medal Citation

HERBERT Richard (Sergeant)

46th Royal Tank Regiment

During the attack on the San Salvo feature by ‘A’ Squadron of 46th Battalion Royal Tank Regiment, the troop of which Sergeant Herbert was Troop Sergeant was allotted the task of dominating the track and road running northwards from San Salvo. Throughout the hours of daylight, Sergeant Herbert commanded his tank with outstanding skill and gallantry and for the whole of the period he was forced to manoeuvre on ground which was covered by enemy observation and fire, a feat which would have taxed the skill of any tank commander to the utmost. In the course of the action he knocked out a German Mk IV Special and evacuated and rendered first aid to the crew of a disabled tank under heavy machine gun fire. In all, Sergeant Herbert was in action continuously for sixteen hours. His skill, courage and determination were an inspiration to his crew and others around him.
