General Service Medal 1918 - 1962

Introduced in 1923 and awarded for services in the British Empire, excluding India and Africa, to members of the Army and Royal Air Force. Eighteen bars were authorised and the medal was never issued without a bar.

The Canal Zone bar was instituted in October 2003 for service between October 1951 and October 1954.

The reverse depicts a standing winged figure of Victory in a Greek helmet and carrying a trident who is placing a wreath (palms) on the emblem of the two services (a winged sword).

The ribbon is purple with a green central band.
